Happy Holidays?

Weddingbee posed another fabulous question today for their Relationship Series.

How are you deciding where you spend the holidays? Was it a big issue between you and your FI? How did you come to a decision?

Oy. That's all I have to say about THAT. Actually, that's not true at all because I always have an opinion on things or a story to contribute.

My parent's were never married so I've always split holidays. Ever since I was little I've eaten 2 meals on the Big Three: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. A few things happened that ended this: Josh and I started getting serious and my dad split with his wife. Now if I see my dad on the holidays that's great, but if not I don't worry about it too much.

Before we got engaged, Josh and I spent the holidays (day-of) with our respective families. We would figure out a day either before or after the actual holiday to see each other's families. However, once we got engaged I really wanted us to spend the days together. Luckily, our parents only live an hour apart. His parents do dinner early and my mom does dinner late, so it all works out. The only issue is the driving. It's not so bad on Thanksgiving, but for Christmas it's a bit of a nightmare. I won't even get into specifics because it might make your head explode. Let's just say I'm looking forward to the day when we can host everyone at our place.

Have the holiday gods made life easy or hard for you?

  1. Oh Lord, this is tough for Ryan and I....I think we're doing Thanksgiving at his house, but for Christmas we couldn't agree so now I'm doing Christmas Eve with his fam, we're each doing Christmas with our own families, and then he's coming to visit with my family Dec. 26. Our families live 2 hours apart, so I guess when we're married I'll get to experience the fun of driving on Christmas just like you do!

  2. sounds familiar!! except our parents are about 2 hrs apart... not the end of the world, but also not awesome to be driving on winter roads on Christmas! The one saving grace for us, is that his family is Danish, and they celebrate on Christmas Eve. This, for the last couple of years anyways, has meant that we spend all of Christmas Eve with his family, drive late at night to my family's place, to wake up for Christmas day. We have started talking about alternating years, but I am not ready to not see my sister on Christmas (divorced parents too... my sister and I were the travellers and alternated years b/w mom and dad!). Ugghhh, definite learning curve!!

  3. I was just thinking I should write a post about this! Our parents live in the same town, so you'd think it'd be easy, but my family celebrates with other relatives who all live about 3 hours away (both on my mom's and dad's sides). We just started discussing Thanksgiving, and I can already tell it's not going to be a fun decision!

Last year was the first year we were together for all of the holiday celebrations which was so nice! I definitely want to continue that.
