Guest Post: Keep It FUN

*Today we have Stacey aka Born to be Mrs. Beever from Thoughts of the All Consumed Bride. She is, in a word, awesome. Please check out her blog (she's recently married and in the process of recapping her gorgeous wedding!)

I am thrilled to be able to write a guest post for Em over here this week while she is basking in the glory of her new love and marriage!  What a joy I know it will be for her and I am so excited to see the amazing photos and beauty that will exude from her on her wedding day!

Today, I'd love to share with you a little quote I found from Katherine Hepburn:

I never lose sight of the fact that just being is fun.

In life, as in love, you need to always have a little fun.  After all, what is the point of being in a relationship if there is not a good deal of laughter and enjoyment from the day to day routine activities?  Especially once you're married.  I have found that in the 2 1/2 weeks that Mr Fix It and I have been settling in to married life in the same home as husband and wife, it is difficult to not fall into a boring, mundane routine with little or no excitement.  And that's where Mr Fix It's personality comes in to the rescue!

Mr Fix It was definitely a little rambunxious as a child, but today, he's a big kid almost every day.  Don't get me wrong, he works...and hard.  His job is physically and mentally demanding.  And he's pretty tired after a long day at work.  So when it's time to run errands, he has to find ways to interject some fun.

For example, when we went shopping for my nephew, PJ's 1st b-day gift at Toys R Us, he found a big bin of bouncing balls in the middle of an aisle.  He grabbed one and said "I'll give you a 3 second hard start for dodge ball!"  When I looked at him and told him to knock it off and be an adult and put the ball down, he just reiterated that I was only being given 3 seconds.  When another customer came around the corner, I assumed he would put the ball down and act his age, but when I turned over my shoulder to look at him, I knew I better run!  And there we were, causing havoc in Toys R Us.

And that is one of the reasons I married him just last month...because no man has ever been able to do silly things like that and learn to just have fun in the silliest of ways.  It's really there within all of us, that element of fun.  We just need to learn not to stifle it and to let it come out and play once in a while.  I'll admit, that I don't typically lean that way in my day to day activities, but being around Mr Fix It, I've learned to play some jokes, make funny faces or even pull off some fun wrestling matches sometimes at unexpected times.

I believe laughter and fun are an essential part of any relationship...not just with children, but with spouses as well.  And today, as I congratulate Em and her new hubby on their recent marriage, I also wish them a lifetime of fun filled days and lots of laughter.  I am sure we will see those beautiful smiles full of joy and fun in the photos and recaps that I for one am so excited to follow very soon!

And away we go!!

If you follow me on Twitter you may have seen some recent tweets about "big news" or "big changes" going on in my life. Well, I'm excited to FINALLY announce that...

We're moving!!

Ha, you thought I was gonna say "pregnant," huh? Def not.

Josh and I have been discussing leaving Ohio for quite awhile now and that dream is finally being realized. The job market in Northeast Ohio is abysmal and it's just time for a change. At first we thought about North or South Carolina, but after a few serious discussions we settled on the DC area. We know a good number of people out there and Josh's sister moved to Maryland a year ago, so it really was a no-brainer.

Recently Josh has been a bit unhappy with his current job and decided to start applying for jobs in the DC area. I told him if he got a job before the wedding that I would stay back and he could move out there without me. Well, he applied, interviewed, and got a job! So that means I'm moving back in with my mom for a few months and we'll be apart for the last 2 months before the wedding. No worries, though. We've done long distance before, I'm not worried about doing it again.

It will definitely be a bit of a struggle, but I know it's temporary and it's the best decision for us. I just can't wait to get out there and get a J-O-B!

Have any of you gone through major life changes immediately before or after your wedding? Any advice?

Bragging

I must take a quick second to give a HUGE shout out to my man. This morning I started freaking out a bit because, well, there are less than 200 days til the wedding and there is still A LOT to get done.

The next few things on our to-do list are transportation, hotel room blocking, and the rehearsal dinner. Sounds easy enough, but with both of us working full-time, and many vendors unavailable on the weekends, I was sort of having a mini-breakdown. Enter in: Josh's day off!

I fired off an email to him this morning with names, websites, and email addresses of a few limo companies and asked him to email them. I gave him all of the info he needed and within 10 minutes the emails had been sent. What a good boy he is!!! (Not to make him sound like a dog or anything of course). He asked if there was anything else and I thought to myself "Why yes, lovey, there is!" I sent him RD info and he contacted them as well! This all made me the happiest 'lil bride in all the land. A weight has seriously been lifted off my shoulders and I'm so lucky to have a man who will help me with wedding planning. I know not all women have that luxury, so I'm milking it for SURE.

How hands-on is your fiance with wedding planning? And go ahead, brag in the comments about something great he's done lately!

Getting to know you!

Fellow blogger Katie over at Random Reflections of a Perfectionist just posted this survey about herself and her FI, Justin. I've never met a survey (or a chance to talk about myself) that I didn't like, so here are my answers:

1. What are your middle names? Mine is Alexandra, his is Matthew.

2. How long have you been together? Just about 4 years! I can't believe he's stuck with me for that long.

3. How long did you know each other before you started dating? We "knew each other" over the internet for about 3 months before our first official date.

4. Who asked who out? He pursued me for soo long and asked me to hang out countless times before I eventually said yes. For our first date it was the same, he asked me to dinner for an official "date."

5. How old are each of you? I am 23 and he is 27

6. Did you go to the same school? We went to the same college but didn't know each other.

7. Are you from the same home town? Nope! Our hometowns are about an hour apart.

8. Who is the smartest? I think we're equally smart but in different ways. He's incredibly computer/technology smart. I am a little more "street" smart I guess, but I really hate using that term. I'm making an executive decision that this is a dumb question.

9. Who majored in what? I majored in Communication and Josh majored in Computer/Electrical Engineering.

10. Who is the most sensitive? Hmm that's tough. I am probably sensitive more frequently, but he gets sensitive about certain things.

11. Where is the furthest you two have traveled together as a couple? Oh we've been all over! Probably the furthest is the Caribbean.

12. Who has the worst temper? Haha ohhhh that would be me. But like the sensitivity thing from above, I think I have a temper and show my emotion more often. Josh can definitely get upset about things, though. Luckily, he doesn't ever take his stresses out on me.

13. How many children do you want? Probably 2, definitely no more than 3.

14. Who does the cooking? We share that load equally!

15. Who is more social? I'd say we're pretty much the same. We both enjoy being the center of attention, but we don't crave it. (Ok, maybe I do a little bit.) We both know how to work a room and feel comfortable meeting and talking to new people. If we're at a party or a bar we're comfortable going off on our own and talking to people. I'm so thankful we don't have to be stuck to each other all the time. I don't know if I could be with some one who couldn't keep up with me on that level.

16. Who is the neat freak? Ugh...I don't wanna talk about it.

17. Who is the most stubborn? That would probably be me. But he has a stubborn side to him, just not as much as me.

18. Who wakes up earlier? I do because I shower, put on make up, and do my hair every morning. I wish I could be a brush my teeth and go type girl, but I just can't. Josh wakes up 15 min before he leaves, but I turn the light on when I leave the room so he can start the "waking up process."

19. Where was your first date? Our first date was at this cute restaurant in our college town, Athens, OH called Stephens. Or Stevens. I can't remember. Doesn't matter. But it has great food and you can BYOB!! We went on many more dates there and drank many bottles of wine. I'd love to go back next time we're in Athens.

20. Who has the bigger family? We're actually pretty close in size when you add up extended family.

21. Do you get flowers often? The last time I got flowers was on our 1 year til the wedding anniversary back in May. So unexpected and so pretty. I'm glad I don't get them often because that makes it all the more special when I do get them.

22. How do you spend the holidays? Please see this post.

23. Who is more jealous? Oh definitely me. It was a big problem early on. I just chalk it up to immaturity. I'm much better now.

24. How long did it take to get serious? We said "I love you" about 2 months after our first date, 3 months after we met face-to-face, and 6 months after our first correspondence. Not sure if the math is right...exactly why I was a Coms major.

25. Who eats more? Josh. Hands down.

26. What do you do for a living? Currently I'm a temp at a large corporation. When I grow up (whenever that may be) I want to get into event planning.

27. Who does the laundry? We do our own.

28. Who's better with the computer? Josh definitely. But I'm fairly computer literate.

29. Who drives when you are together? Usually Josh. Although most of our fights stem from his driving, so maybe I should start sharing the load.

30. What is your song? You know, we don't really have one. We have lots of songs that we love to sing together, though.

Copy, paste, and add your answers on your blog!

Happy Holidays?

Weddingbee posed another fabulous question today for their Relationship Series.

How are you deciding where you spend the holidays? Was it a big issue between you and your FI? How did you come to a decision?

Oy. That's all I have to say about THAT. Actually, that's not true at all because I always have an opinion on things or a story to contribute.

My parent's were never married so I've always split holidays. Ever since I was little I've eaten 2 meals on the Big Three: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. A few things happened that ended this: Josh and I started getting serious and my dad split with his wife. Now if I see my dad on the holidays that's great, but if not I don't worry about it too much.

Before we got engaged, Josh and I spent the holidays (day-of) with our respective families. We would figure out a day either before or after the actual holiday to see each other's families. However, once we got engaged I really wanted us to spend the days together. Luckily, our parents only live an hour apart. His parents do dinner early and my mom does dinner late, so it all works out. The only issue is the driving. It's not so bad on Thanksgiving, but for Christmas it's a bit of a nightmare. I won't even get into specifics because it might make your head explode. Let's just say I'm looking forward to the day when we can host everyone at our place.

Have the holiday gods made life easy or hard for you?

Ideal Age

A few days ago on Weddingbee's Relationship Series they asked the following question:

The ideal age difference between a couple is ___. Why do you feel this way?

I am a firm believer in dating a guy who is older than you. All of the guys I've dated have been older than me, except for my first boyfriend (and kiss). My first boyfriend and I were together for a good part of my freshman year in high school. We had a cute thing going on, but I knew that dating guys my age just wasn't for me. The next year I moved on to a boy one year older than me. We also had a cute thing, but even a one year difference wasn't enough for me. The rest of my previous boyfriends were also at least one year older than me.

Josh and I are four years apart, which works out perfectly. We're close enough in age that we're able to enjoy the same activities, but we're far apart enough to have experienced the same events at different times in our lives. For example: when he started college cell phones were not the norm. They had to actually make plans ahead of time and remember phone numbers. Huh? That's insane for me to think about because when I started college 4 years after he did, you were a nobody if you didn't have a cell phone. Remember a phone number? I don't think so.

I've found that boys my age are just not on the same level as me. Guys tend to "develop" a little slower than girls so dating an older guy makes sense. This may be "ageist" of me, but I highly doubt I would consider dating some one younger than me. Luckily, I have Josh so I never have to worry about that!

How far apart in age are you and your SO?

All by mysayeeeyeellfff

That is me singing Celine Dion, in case you didn't know. So remember this post from back in May? The one about me going crazy while BRG was away? Well, today I'm singing a different tune. My guy is in North Carolina until Thursday night for work and I'm actually kind of excited. Of course I'll miss him, but I'm really looking forward to some "me" time.

I've mentioned before that after a 6+ month bout of unemployment, I recently started working. The minute I gained employment, I lost all of my "me" time. And I'm a girl who loves her some "me" time. So for the next few nights I'm going to watch the silly shows he wont watch, stalk the WB Boards, and pee with the door open. (TMI?)

And just because no blog post is complete without a picture, here is one of us on the 4th of July.

Do you ever need a break from your FI? Just a bit of alone time once in a while?

About Us Part 2

When I left you, I saw a young man who looked vaguely familiar approaching me. Luckily, it WAS Josh. To be honest, I was a little disappointed. In his pictures he had facial hair and it was something that I thought made him very attractive. In person, he was clean shaven. We had an awkward hug, shared a few awkward sentences, and went on our way.

A few days later, I agreed to meet up with him at a bar. As I approached him, I again was disappointed. WHAT was he wearing? I knew if this was going anywhere I'd have a lot of work to do in the fashion department. We had a really fun (read: really drunken) night at the bar. We continued to talk all the time and had our second bar date about a week later. Again, massive quantities of alcohol were consumed (apparently I was trying to impress him with my drinking abilities) and we had our first kiss. Due to our, um, drunken state I decided I would pretend that I "didn't remember" and hoped he would do the same. A few days later, he invited me to his apartment to watch "The Notebook" (I know). That is when we had our first "real" (read: sober) kiss. It was fabulous and sparks definitely flew. We had our first "official" date a few weeks later and by November 24, 2005 we were boyfriend/girlfriend!

I definitely made him work for this, huh? My heart was definitely guarded as I had just gone through a rough break up as well as a dumping from a guy I thought I had some kind of a future with. I even told him, "I think I'm scared to like you." I really just needed to let it go, and finally I did. And look where we are now!!

About Us

I suppose I should explain who Burning River Bride is, as well as my Burning River Groom. Ha, he'd think that was so manly. Our story is not the typical, boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, blah blah. We met, dundundun, online! I guess these days it's not all that unusual, but I think it still has a bit of a stigma attached to it. However, whenever I tell some one, I'm usually surprised at their positive reaction. Sure, I get a lot of eye rolls, but I'm surprised at how many have similar stories.

Our online avenue was MySpace. So stalker-ish, I know. He messaged me during the summer of 2005 and we began an online friendship. We both went to Ohio University, but he was older so I figured he'd be able to give me booze and a place to party. At the time, I was kind of seeing some one (clearly that did not work out) and I considered our correspondence to be purely platonic. I think he had other ideas. Once we returned to school that fall, he asked EVERY SINGLE DAY if I wanted to hang out. I'm not exaggerating. Did I want to have lunch? Did I want to go to dinner? Did I want to come over and watch a movie? Every day. And every day I said no. I had running dinner and lunch dates with my best friend (and now bridesmaid!) that I didn't feel comfortable breaking for some guy I'd never met.

One day were chatting online while he was in class. Class was about to end and I was about to go to dinner. We said our online goodbyes and I headed off to dinner. The building his class was in happened to be located right by my dorm. As I walked out the door, I noticed a guy who looked familiar (remember, I'd only seen pictures at this point) and as he walked closer I nervously said "Uhh, Josh??"

To be continued...
